Pablo needs to stop smoking. Why? Because his wife, family and doctor say he should. But Pablo is a stubborn man. He has worked in the mercury mines of Almadén, Spain, risking his life daily. He has had five severe heart attacks and smoked 20 Winston cigarettes a day since he was 12. Now in his seventies, Pablo spends most of his day in front of the TV, surrounded by a cloud of smoke, with his back turned firmly towards a village that has lived through better times.

Pablo represents the last generation of Almadén mercury miners, an age-old profession with over 2,000 years of history. Through a straightforward depiction of life’s everyday moments, Pablo’s Winter explores the decay of the local mining culture, but above all, pays homage to its real protagonists: the miners and their families.

The film, to me, is a very subtle metaphor, but powerful and not easily overlooked. It is very hard to create a story arc that is both subtle (does not insult one’s intelligence) and also brings you to tears as the deep currents rise, briefly appear, and then sink into inky blackness. People will realize the film is not just about Pablo and his smoking. So many careful moments, metaphors, and sentiments are woven into a mastery of film making. The bicycle, the ball game at the head frame, the heart wrenching walk through the mine, the constant tension and resigned acceptance of old marrieds. The list goes on. This is no mere trifle of film making, it is a work of passion from a master story teller and film maker.

For me, your film captures something I have long talked about in my tours, the loss of an entire way of life and the scattering of hard-won treasure like so much rubbish left to the ravages of indifference, ignorance, and time. We went through “the change” in New Almaden much earlier than Almaden, Spain. For us it happened just after the turn of the century. A profound sadness still seeps from the quiet places, especially underground. Our fathers and grandfathers labored daily to reduce solid rock to nothingness, and the underground spaces they left behind are both an awesome sight and a terrible warning. Life disappears, just like the rock, wealth and treasures disappear. The only thing that matters is the arc of life, the fact that something reproduced since the beginning of time to bring us to this moment, in an unbroken chain, and here we are. The stewardship is all.
