A third award for Pablo!
Pablo's Winter is now a triple award-winning film. First the EU-OSHA Award plus a honourable mention at DOK Leipzig, then Best Student Documentary at IDFA in Amsterdam, and now the Full Frame President's Award.
This picture shows Chico Pereira (left) next to Niels van Koevorden from the Netherlands who won the Short Film Competition with the film By Her Side. Everyone thought that they were brothers... and they both got awards, Thanks to Todd Tinkham for this great photo.
Black, white, and mercury-grey
Just wanted to share the text written by the Full Frame festival about the film:
"For centuries, Almadén was home to one of Spain’s major mercury mines. Since the closing of the mine fifteen years ago, the town and its former miners, like Pablo, continue to struggle. Director Chico Pereira’s gorgeous black, white, and mercury-gray documentary debut exudes a lush vigor and richness that belies the economic state of Almadén and the advancing years of many of its residents. Dry-witted dramas unfold over not-so-quiet conversations, and many a Marlboro, in this laconic character study of a protagonist, who at first, second, and third glance remains singularly off-putting. But more time with Pablo yields a larger tale of hero and town—the beauty of both become increasingly more certain, and begrudgingly endearing. Ultimately, this alluring visual narrative cleverly combines the striking vistas of the village with the musings and ministrations of a grumpy old man to such excellent effect, you’ll be glad to pull up a chair and join him." – Source: fullframefest.org

Pablo's greetings to the people of New York
In the wake of the North American Premiere of Pablo's Winter on the opening night of the prestigious Documentary Fortnight at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Pablo decided to address his American audience directly.
He also decided to bust the myth that he only exists in a monochrome world.

Pablo's Winter to open MoMA festival in NYC
Pablo will be smoking in the Big Apple. In a press release this week, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City announced its plans for Documentary Fortnight:
"The Museum of Modern Art announces Documentary Fortnight 2013: MoMA’s International Festival of Nonfiction Film and Media, the 12th annual two-week showcase of recent documentary films examining the relationship between contemporary art and nonfiction practices, and reflecting on new areas of documentary filmmaking, from February 15 through March 4, 2013."
Pablo's Winter will screen on the festival's opening night. This is the North American premiere for the Chico Pereira's film. According to MoMa,
"the festival opens on February 15 with two daring new approaches in filmmaking: Ilian Metev’s Sofia’s Last Ambulance (Germany/Bulgaria/Croatia, 2012), which premiered at the 51st International Critics Week at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where it was the second documentary ever to compete; and Chico Pereira’s Pablo’s Winter ([Scotland/]Spain, 2012), winner of the Competition for Student Documentary at IDFA, the world's largest documentary festival."
